Large stray or community dog populations have long been a concern for transmission and perpetuation of dog rabies variants in much of African and Asian tormented by the disease. These hard-to-reach dogs can heavily spoil mass dog vaccination campaigns using inactivated vaccines or render them ineffective. Now an old idea– giving dogs oral vaccine – is taken up. This concept has been successfully used in eliminating rabies in wildlife. With the availability of modern highly safe oral rabies vaccines it is newly interpreted for dogs and can be a game changer in the fight of dog-mediated rabies in the future.
